[net.religion] belief criteria

rtris (03/28/83)

I am very curious about something. I get the impression that there are a
lot of people out there who are not prepared to ascribe truth value to
anything that is not >* scientifically *< provable.

(Introducing meta-discussion that might prove to be less emotional)

Do you believe this? If so in what form? Or are there specific areas yoyu
consider not subjectable to this (like: my wife loves me), and if so how
do you decide which areas are subject and which aren't?

A specific thing I have in mind w.r.t. science are results like the
Uncertainty Principle (perhaps not incredibly relevant) and
Goedel's work (Loose summary as I understand it: for any formal system X
there exist statements which are true, but which cannot be proven to be so.
I.e. provability is weaker than truth.)
