If you haven't yet, you should read "The Mind's I" by Hofstadter and Dennett. At least read the selections "Selfish genes, selfish memes" for a new look at evolution, and "??" (sorry, I forget the title) which is a fascinating conversation between God and a person praying for the removal of his free will. Alan
