[net.religion] Israel and the Holy Land

fdf@houxa.UUCP (06/29/83)

I hope I can be excused for posting a note to net.religion
that probably should be in net.politics, but here goes:

The obvious reason to call the Holy Land the Holy Land is that
many people do not consider the occupied West Bank of the Jordon
(which includes some parts of Jerusalem, the Holy City) to be
part of Israel. In fact, the US government still supports the
returning of that area to Jordan (or a semi-autonomous Palestinian
State).

Unlike Andy Tannenbaum, I don't think the use of Holy Land
is meant as an offense to Jews, although it probably may be taken
as an insult by Mr. Begin.
