Does anyone have any information on Herbert W. Armstrong and the Worldwide Church of God? Way back when, I would listen to his son, Garner Ted, but I never really understood their "theology". Recently, I started picking up HWA late night on an AM radio station. Some of the stuff he peddles sounds really off base, like his notion of the United States and England being the 10 tribes of Israel (sounds remotely like Mormonism). I'm not interested in joining, just curious. I've come in contact with some people that have mentioned HWA and his beliefs. Some questions I have include: Is it a real denomination with local congregations? Does he have "ministers/priests"? Where does he get some of his more "exotic" ideas? From the Bible? Other sources of revelation? What kind of people are involved in/contribute to his church? Specific responses can be sent to me. Information of a general nature may be posted to the net. Thanks, Tom Albrecht ...!{presby|psuvax}!burdvax!cng

The notion that the British and the Americans are heirs of the 10 tribes of Israel comes from a popular (19th century?) belief in England. It is called British-Israelism. It has shown up recently in the teachings of the Posse Comitatus, the ultra-right wing political organization as well as the HW Armstrong church. Mark Kohls
