[net.religion] Abortion -- where will the line be drawn?

cng@burdvax.UUCP (07/05/83)

Alan contends that his wife having an abortion has no impact on anyone
else's life. Do you want us to believe, Alan, that we as individuals have
no responsibility to protect another human being? Should I just sit back
and watch a woman being raped and beaten? Not only do we have individual
responsibilities, but our nation was founded on the principle that we must
resist evil wherever it is found. The United States could have sat out
during WWII and allowed Hitler to have his way with the Jews in Europe. We
knew that at some point we would have no choice. Hitler, if left to his
own sadistic devices, would eventually end up in New Jersey.

There is a very good reason for limiting your 'freedoms' when it comes to
abortion. Innocent children are being murdered because we've allowed
ourselves to be brainwashed into believing that a women's 'freedom' is at
stake. I don't believe that the freedom to procreate indiscriminately is
worth the death of millions of innocent children.

If my wife has an abortion, that has NO impact on your life.
In fact, quite the contrary, for a person never born cannot in
	any way infringe on you.

But, a person never born also cannot contribute anything to my life.
Note that since I assume that life begins at conception, I consider
this person as one who already exists but has not been allowed to grow.--

On the subject of ''killing innocent children'' you are assuming
life begins at conception. Indeed, most of the arguments for/against
abortion deal with this issue of when life begins. To those
who argue that life begins at conception, I submit you are
dealing out a double-standard: After all, the medical definition
of death is now when brain activity ceases (not, as it was
years ago, when the heart stops); now, are you telling me
that when sperm and egg meet there is brain activity? How
can you have one definition of life at the beginning and
another at the end?

sher@rochester.UUCP (07/07/83)

Why do you think human life starts at conception. Every healthy human
egg is a potential human life only cut off if the woman in question
fails to have sex. How dare all those women abstain, staining the the
very name of morality. We sit back and let millions of children die
every day! Remember that in the bible it says "be fruitful and
multiply". Every teenager who does not have sex every day is
murdering a child!

Why is this possition different from that taken by the
anti-abortionists?

Oh, pain. I, too, have spent mental effort and anguish addressing
this worry on the net...about a year and a half ago. I'll be a lot
more brusque this time. The moral issues *are* a personal decision,
not a governmental one. The government has only the responsibility to
enforce such laws as prevent disruption of our culture and economy; this
is, no matter how touchy, not a matter which will disrupt either in and
of itself. AND, no matter how liberal I may feel about other people and
their opinions, I must admit that the militant right-to-lifers and
right-wing Falwellites (well, it's the most descriptive phrase I could
come up with!) are really grating on my nerves...

To all Pro-Lifers:
I have a question. What are you going to do with the unwanted babies after
they are born? If you answer "adopt them all" then I have some news for you.

Two out of every three fertilized eggs fail to become implanted in the uterus, and thus are flushed out during menstruation. That means that literally millions of "Unborn children" are dying every month in this country. This is more
than all other diseases combined. Shouldn't we be diverting the larger
part of our national health care resource to prevent these trajedies. Maybe
a National Institute for Zygote Health.

Liz asks, in reference to fetal rights, "where will the line be drawn"?
Listen, that argument is wonderful and thoughtful and warm, but it is
NOT REALISTIC! People disagree; societies DO draw lines; life is a
series of compromises.

Smokers can pollute my part of the public air, directly interfering with
my life, but the same society that permits that won't let me burn leaves
in my back yard because of the consequences to others. (To me, only the
latter makes sense, but I hope you seen the point.) If my wife has an
abortion, that has NO impact on your life. In fact, quite the contrary,
for a person never born cannot in any way infringe on you.

If you want to limit my freedoms, you had better at least have a good
argument for why you stand to gain thereby.

Frankly, I resent ANY attacks on Planned Parenthood, because
they're one of the few organizations in this country trying
to STOP abortions in the first place, by getting people good birth
control devices and medication before they start screwing around.
I'd say support them to the max, and make sure that their message
and information gets to as many people as possible, so that
there will be fewer unwanted pregnancies in the first place.

silver@csu-cs.UUCP (07/13/83)

Responses to responses...

There are already too many people in the world. If you argue against
abortion because it deprives the world of potential people, you are not
being realistic. More people does not mean more great people; actually,
it means less for everyone, and everyone suffers. (To reiterate my main
argument: Those against abortion are being more idealistic than
realistic.)

Killing young fetuses is neither quantitatively nor qualitatively the
same as killing concious human beings. Stop pushing the "Hitler
argument"; it only avoids the real issue. We are discussing abortion,
not genocide.

If you haven't been through the experience, I truly believe that in this
case you are simply not qualified to comment. I have been there and I
do speak from experience. (yes, I'm male, but you know what I mean...)

Willing to argue this subject all night (sigh...),
