I have seem to remember reading a long time ago (in a state far far away) that when the followers of Joseph Smith et. al. arrived in Utah that each family was given a certain amount of land and was expected to live off it. Needless to say some plots were better than others (water, good soil etc.) and a lot of people didn't make it through the winter. Since this is a rather interesting example of organizing a society I was wondering if any one out there know where I can find some details about it. Is it even true? (It really has been a long time since I first heard about this).
