[net.religion] What"s this group for? I"ll tell you...

There is an interesting point contained in the need to shout
at others that they are damned (we have a regular here who
appears in Spring and hangs around haranguing until Fall when,
I presume, he hears a call to go to Florida).

My guess is that the need to do so stems from wanting to be
right. I find that those people, and many other sour-pussed
born-agains are inside grinding against isolation, and that
their talk about christian fellowship carries the stress on
fellowship, not on christian. Of course, they strongly object
to that view.

Wouldn't it be nice if all these good people could keep each
other just friendly company? I think then their need to preach
about would cease and they could function as useful members of
society.

shout at others that they are damned . . .

	be right.

My experience from talking to some of these folks it that most of
them are not preaching out of insecurity but out of a desire for
people to know who Jesus is and of his love. If they were just
preaching damnation, that would be a problem... I have heard some
things from these preachers that made me wince, but you try standing
up somewhere and take a controversial stand on something. Let's
see if you don't make some mistakes. Here, (at least) we can go
back and edit our remarks before broadcasting...

That's funny -- I've only heard people complain that Christians
are too cliquish...

I think then their need to preach about would cease and

Maybe preaching is a useful function -- if Jesus really is Lord
and really does want fellowship with us, people need to know that.
