[net.religion] Jesus Christ as an expletive

larry@grkermit.UUCP (Larry Kolodney) (08/18/83)

Why is it that so many Jews use the phrase "Jesus Christ!" to express dismay or
disbelief?

Many millions of non-Jewish people also use the expletive Jesus Christ,
including atheists, agnostics, existentialists, members of non-Judaic
faiths, etc. Why did you phrase your question in such a prejudiced
manner?

~~~~~~~~~~
Most Jews I know (myself included), think very little of Jesus Christ
and the concept of Christianity, yet they constantly refer to his name.
I wasn't claiming that there was anything hypocritical about this, just
that it was interesting and I wondered why.  I have not had enough
experience with people of non-Jewish non-Christian faiths to be able to
comment on them although I'm sure many of them do to.  You are right
about the athiests though, that was an error of omission.
Not to mention the athiest Jews!
	Many non-Jewish people also use Jesus-Christ as an expletive,...
	Why did you phrase your question in such a prejudiced manner?
Sorry, the name of the "you" who supposedly "phrase your question..." just
passed over my screen and I can't get it back without exiting followup.
Allen England, unless he is Jew, in which case he is hurt personally, is
developing a sense of guilt :-) & :-(  . The reason "you" (whoever he is)
asked about Jews only is - I suppose - because Jew don't believe in J-C,
and unlike atheists & co., they grow up in an environment when people are
not suppose to belive in JC. An atheist grows up with Christians, or at least
with people who have grown up w/ Christians; and thus is "eligible" for
Christian habit. "You" 's question is: Jews don't grow up w/ Christians.
Why do they do so ?
I want to add my own question: Why do Christians do that ? In fact, why
do people call the name of their deity whenever in distress. I think it's
supposed to be the other way around: call the name of their deity AFTER
they passed the disaster.
It doesn't seem to me that the question was so badly bigoted.  Remember
that Jews, Christians and Moslems all worship the same God.  However,
they differ on the divinity on Christ.  The question of why Jews would
use "Christ" as an expletive strikes me as just as interesting as the
question of why a Christian would swear by "the Prophet".  Except I've
never heard a Christian do that.  Why an atheist would use the name of
a god he doesn't believe in as an expletive doesn't seem any more
curious than the question of why a believer would say "blast".
