Well, that didn't take long. The number of requests for quotable sources on the translation of "You shall not murder" was not quite astounding, but it was significant, so I'm posting what I've got so far. The Modern Language Bible translates that commandment (Exodus 20:13) as "You shall not murder." The New International Version similarly states "You shall not murder." The Scofield Reference Bible, which is (in my opinion) one of the best reference Bibles around which still uses the basic KJV format and phras- ing, says "Thou shalt not kill." with a footnote on "kill," which in turn reads The Hebrew language employs several words to express the idea, "to kill." The verb used here is a special word which can only mean "murder" and always indicates intention- al slaying. At the moment, I'm still hunting a certain commentary on the subject, which has somehow disappeared. I've asked a friend or two to help me locate it. Maybe I'll post that when I find it. (And, then again, maybe I won't, if this discussion has died out by then. This discus- sion shouldn't have needed to be started in the first place; this is an *old* issue, taken care of in Judeo-Christian circles quite a long time ago.) ============== Karl Kleinpaste =============== ...!allegra!rocksvax!ritcv!ccieng5!ccieng2!kfk ...!seismo!rochester!ritcv!ccieng5!ccieng2!kfk
