[net.religion] End of the World

bam (04/19/83)

The official word from Sydney, Australia (18 hours ahead of the
Pacific coast)

The world just ended.

I'm very sorry to be the one to make the official announcement here
but somebody had to say it.

East coast and european sites that depend on west coast sites for
mail and news will be pleased to know that most west coast hub sites
will attempt to remain in operation until the last ten minutes to
allow for a clean shutdown.

A new newsgroup (net.armageddon) has been formed to provide news
and information on future housing and jobs in the afterlife.

UNC!tim has made a very good point regarding the seemingly
universal interpretation of the book of Revelation by media
preachers as referring to an inevitable nuclear exchange
between the US and the USSR. This is indeed a real and
dangerous indication of Moral Majority Madness. I would like
to make two more major points on this issue.

FIRST:Christians will be the first to assert that the Jews made
their fatal mistake by expecting that the Hebrew prophets'
predictions regarding the first coming of the Messiah must be
literally fulfilled. The Jews in the Roman empire were apparantly
expecting a warrior-messiah who would save them from the Romans.
I find it interesting that American christians are so insistant
that the Revelation be literally fulfilled; they expect a
warrior-messiah to save them from Reagan's "evil empire of
Russia".

SECOND:This is not the universal Christian attitude. In a recent
column, the originator of TV evangilism (Billy Graham) said that
he does NOT believe that the Revelation necessarily implies a
nuclear holocaust. Rev. Graham went on to suggest that Christians
should do all they can to PREVENT war and the resulting destruction
of human life.

Let's not twist the teachings of the Prince of Peace into a
war declaration against Russia.
