I suggest that the proposed constitution amendment on prayer in the public school should mandate that the prayers should be directed to Zeus. My reasons are: From the discussion in netnews we can see that God (Yahweh) is not a good candidate for school children prayers. We have one group claiming that God is a hideous monster not worthy of worship. There is another group who claims that God is good but unfortunately we cannot understand his actions. Well, if we cannot understand God then he most likely will not be able to understand school children prayers. This would make our children effort an exercise in futility. On the other hand, Zeus seems to be a nice guy/god (maybe a bit lusty) worthy of our school children prayers. -- Yosi Hoshen Bell Laboratories Naperville, Illinois (312)-979-7321 Mail: ihnp4!ihuxn!jho

Yosi Hoshen says that Zeus is a nice guy and an appropriate god for our children to pray to? I would say that he is more than "a bit lusty". He was a sex fiend. Anything to get into a woman's bed (or, for a change, a boy's--see Ganymede). And his arguments with his wife! He was petty, vindictive, and given only to satisfying his own pleasure. Don't forget that he was also a parricide, which to the Greeks (and to a greater extent the Romans) was just about the worst thing that one could do. I don't think that he should be prayed to at all, by anyone. John Hobson AT&T Bell Labs--Naperville, IL ihnp4!ihuxq!amigo2
