References: Some of the correspondents to the prayer-in-the-schools issue seem to be unaware of an important controversy that has been raging in this country for at least 30 years. I will describe both sides of the issue. I am extremely ambivalent about it: SIDE 1: EVERYONE could afford to send his children to a private school, if everyone were allowed to direct his share of school taxes to the private school of his or her choice. (Or alternatively, if every child received a credit for a certain amount of funds to be applied to the school of choice.) SIDE 2: If the above were allowed, the public schools would die. Only the poorest, most stupid children wold go to them. Private schools would segregate many groups of children in their formative years, a divisive effect upon society. Quality would fluctuate wildly among these new private schools. - Toby Robison allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison princeton!eosp1!robison (NOTE! NOT McMillan; Robison.)
