I was in the second grade when the phrase "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. To introduce this change, the teacher asked us who God was. I still remember very clearly raising my hand, being called on, and confidently answering, "Nature". Miss Fende cocked her head thoughtfully, and responded hesitatingly with, "Noooooooo, ....", adding some comment such as, "God made nature". I think the reason I remember this so clearly is that I was surprised at being contradicted, being quite happy living in the bosom of Mother Earth, I suppose. Anyway, I have retained my pantheistic inclination to this day, in spite of Miss Fende's attempt at creationist indoctrination :-) Lew Mammel, Jr. ihnp4!ihuxr!lew
