[net.music] Who's still doing Long and varied rock pieces?

I didn't think that was the question, but if it was, the answer is:
Mike Oldfield.  Although the only long, varied piece on his latest non-
soundtrack album was only 12 minutes long, the two previous albums both
contained side-long varied pieces:  the title cut from the 1983 album
"Crises" (21 minutes) and "Taurus II" from the 1982 album "Five Miles Out"
(25 minutes).  As with all of Oldfield's work except his recent pop songs,
these are mostly instrumental, but they are certainly among the best that
he has ever done.  They're much louder in general than his earlier work
("Tubular Bells", "Hergest Ridge" and "Ommadawn") and they are much more
varied, with a much wider range of musical styles, especially "Taurus II".
I have yet to find as much different music in one single piece.
