I originally sought the source for the following quote:
"In the beginning, God created man in His image, and man -
not to be outdone - returned the compliment."
I have found the following quote from Voltaire's "Le Sottisier: XXXII":
"If God made us in His image, we have certainly returned the compliment."
I think that this is the original quote, and the version I originally
gave is a paraphrase (unintentionally) created by the vagaries of
the speaker's memory.
The point is that the moving image of God which appears in the Bible
could well have been caused by the effect cited by Voltaire.
