[net.religion] Quick point about the medieval Church as seen today

dyer@wivax.UUCP (Stephen Dyer) (05/29/84)

Um, it never fails to gall me a bit when people (here, Jeff Sargent)
bring up the excesses of the Church during the Middle Ages, and identify
it as the "Catholic Church," as if the rest of Christendom were somehow
absolved from any connection with the Church following the Reformation--
distancing themselves from the odor of corruption, as it were.

This is not to say that the clerics and officials of the Roman Catholic
Church behaved defensibly back then; of course not! But if the people of
the Church failed back then, we all inherit the stigma of that failure.
