[net.religion] Why Smoke Replys

nowlin@ihu1e.UUCP (Jerry Nowlin) (06/26/84)

I waited a couple weeks for the smoke to clear (pun intended) before I
got back to this subject. I wanted to give everyone a chance to reply. I've
received lots of interesting responses to my original posting of "Why Smoke?".
I've also gotten several requests to post my replys back to the net. Some of
the messages I received were pretty personal. I have deleted all the header
and signature sections from the messages I received so that the posted list
will contain relatively anonymous messages. If anyone that sent me a reply
doesn't want it posted please let me know. I'll wait till the end of this
week to post if I do.

The collection is almost 1000 lines even with all the identifying
information removed. Is this too big to post? Is there enough interest to
justify the posting? Please respond by mail. Unless I get lots of negative
feedback it will go in net.misc sometime this weekend. I have also been
collecting the news articles that responded. I don't intend to repost them
but if anyone that didn't get in on this at the beginning would like, I'll
mail them to you.

Thanks to all the people who responded. Most took me seriously and
responded in kind. I now have a whole new perspective on the problems
involved in giving up smoking. I can recognize times that I've hindered more
than I've helped when trying to motivate friends and family to quit. There
was another important question implied in the original posting. What can a
non-smoker do to help smokers quit? Even though I'm about as close to a
militant non-smoker as you can get there are still people I care about that
smoke, and I would like to be able to help them quit. There are some good
pointers if not actual advice in the replys I got. Again, thanks for
responding.
