[net.religion] Religious meetings in schools

rcd@opus.UUCP (06/28/84)

According to a news item today (6/28), the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly
approved a bill to allow student religious groups to meet in public high
schools. I don't particularly care to judge the effects of that - it can
be done either reasonably or badly - but I find the following comment (from
the AP article) very interesting. The bill was approved:

...ignoring warnings of "bizarre cults" on school grounds that
prompted the House to reject such a proposal.

The attitude of the House, if we believe this news report, seems
incredible. In effect, it says that they were afraid to grant religious
groups the right to meet because they were afraid that the "wrong" groups
would get to meet on public property. [Religious freedom for approved
religious groups. Get yer applications for approval right here, folks...]
