[net.religion] Religion as Security Blanket

>This business of 'religion as a drug' is one of the biggest peices of baloney
>I've ever heard.

Uh, is it a drug or a security blanket? (I.e., what complaint are we
discussing?)

>Moses got chased out of Egypt, yelled at by YHWH,...Jeremiah spent most
>of his life hiding...David the king lost his friend Jonathan and many of
>his children...The apostles were all martyred...

As it is written, we've got a handful of people who were intelligent,
tenacious, outspoken, and willing to challenge established authority. So,
first of all, it's not surprising that they had things rough, and second,
that doesn't have squat to do with the average Joe and how religion
influences him. Just because a few leaders were religious and sought
answers to the hard questions, you don't have any basis for saying that
most people take religion that way. Actually, I think that the point that
someone was trying to make a while back is that the bulk of religious folk
take the predigested wisdom of the few leaders and accept it with little
thought and even less questioning.
