From the Washington Times, July 10, 1984:
"York Minster damage laid to lightning fire" (by Peter Almond)
YORK, England-- York Minster, one of Europe's largest and most
magnificent medieval cathedrals, was gutted by fire yesterday--
just two days after playing host to one of the most bitterly fought
consecrations in modern English history.
Lightning was believed to have caused the fire that destroyed the
roof of the 12th century south transept....
But given the charges of blasphemy that had echoed off the
cathedral's ancient walls during Friday's concecration of the Rev.
David Jenkins as bishop of Durham, some insisted the fire was divine
retribution for the appointment of a man who stands accused by
fundamentalists of doubting basic Christian scriptures.
The article goes on to say that Bishop Jenkins does not believe in the
historical truth of the virgin birth and the ressurection, that this
(not suprisingly) provoked a storm of protest and that protesters had
gathered about the church on the day of the fire.
So how about it? Does God really get even with us? Due to the length
of this article I shall post my opinions separately. I would, however,
like to hear from others.
BTW, the damage is supposedly completely covered by insurance. Now there's
a REAL miracle for you! :^)
