[net.religion] What is religion?

Let me tell you about a couple of very good friends of mine.
They both found that they did like each other,
although he did note that she had some freckles and a couple
of small scars (Her appearance was not Perfect).
But he didn't turn away.
Although she did note that he had a way of getting depressed when
things went particularly wrong (His mind was not Perfect).
But she stayed around.
Although they did note that some people in each of the other's family
would occasionally do unwise things (Their associates were not Perfect).
In spite of these things, they are moved in and married
and everything, because they are, rather permanently,
in Love.

We all have another friend,
in whom, through our imperfect eyes, we see
blemishes and incongruities.
We could turn away,
but don't, because
we are in Love, with God.

We are always free to find fault with others,
find fault with the Universe,
find fault with the Divine;
and, with our own Perfect logic,
and Perfect minds,
and Perfect perceptions,
maintain our own Perfect Pride, standing tall,
in the company of lonely people,
on the wet gravel of a rocky island.

We are always free to Give Up the large portion
of our pride, and accept (from someone greater
than ourselves) Love, Peace, and Immortality.

Love = religion
Ritual = cult
Scripture = philosophy
