[net.religion] Heaven

brianp@shark.UUCP (Brian Peterson) (07/08/84)

To those who believe in afterlife (not another life here on earth)
Watcha gonna do once you get there? Eternity, plus a few centuries,
is an awful long time to play harps n stuff.
Does god provide cable T.V. ? :-)
If any religions go into that, could someone please give
a bit of a rundown?

Brian Peterson asked what goes on in heaven. One suggestion I have heard is
that in heaven we will be able to be everything we have the potential to be,
without interference (from within ourselves or from evil forces outside). We
will be able to be fully creative, joyful -- the word that sums it all up is
"alive". As the apostle John wrote (approximate quote), "When He [Jesus]
appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." We shall be
like Him -- vibrant with life.

On top of that, we won't have difficulties with our equipment (whatever
equipment one has available in heaven, which remains to be seen). One friend
of mine who is an excellent pianist remarked, only half facetiously, that he
was looking forward to being able to play a piano in absolutely perfect tune.

Those of you with better things to do than to flame Jeff might want
to try this little essay question (suggested in part by an essay by
Umberto Eco in the current issue of FMR...which I read at the library
rather than purchased):

Briefly trace the changing image of Heaven in Western Intellectual history.

Since there are so many historians here, that seems like an interesting
sort of diversion. Now, for part two:

If you've ever thought of or believed in Heaven, sit down and do the same
tracing in your private "history".

Those of you with any curiousity but little religious inclination can try
this with the "ideal state" of your choice...I'm sure that *someone* will
step forward to claim that that's *all we're doing, anyway...*

If you come up with anything interesting, give me a holler. Were the
two short essays isomorphic?

Yer pal,

Hmm, netnews with automatic 'n'-ing of articles you don't want,
at unlimited baud rate?

A car that corners at 10 Gs?

A young lady that doesn't have to wash her cat every night
for the next month?

Hmmm, maybe I'll stop wearing those seatbelts! :-)

When I was in school (St. Annes), the nuns told us that your accomod-
ations in heavan were commensurate with your behaviour here on Earth.
In other words, if you were fairly good, you would have a nice condo
with an artificial fireplace and a 17" color tv. If you were REALLY
good, you might get a 3 bdr house with sunken tub and a 26" tv!

         What a CROCK!!

What happens in heaven?

"Every glimpse of heaven shows them worshiping; Ezekiel 1:1-5,
the creatures out of the fire were worshiping God; Isaiah 6:1-6,
we see the Lord high and lifted up and hear the creatures
saying, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts"; Revelation
4:8-11, God opens heaven and we see them there worshiping
God the Father; and in the fifth chapter, verses 6 to 14, we
see them worshiping God the Son."
				A. W. Tozer
				"Worship: The Normal Employment
				of Moral Beings", 1961

These scriptures suggest that we will spend our time in heaven
worshiping God in the fullness He intends...

I sure hope I don't go to THAT guy's heaven. I prefer to have an
independent will! (besides, my knees would get sore :-)

Some of the very old documents of the church suggest that
the notion of worship (liturgy) looks very much like everyday
life. The word "liturgy" is from a very old root that pretty literally
translates as "the work of the people". The difference lies in the
suggestion that worship is work directed to its proper end, and
acknowledging its origin and purpose. That's what the old books say,
anyhow. Now, perhaps a better question would be something like "How is
work in Heaven different that work on Earth?........

Worship -
1 The act of paying reverence to God.
2 Adoration, praise.

Reverence -
1 Deep respect, together with awe and affection.

Worship is simply the deliberate act of expressing ones feelings of love
and respect to God. It is a natural consequence of an awareness of God's
greatness and His love for us. It follows that in the awareness of God's
greatness, we are also aware of our own smallness; however, as long as God
is the center of our attention, worship does not degrade into groveling, as
some choose to think.
