[net.religion] World's Right to Life

gtaylor@lasspvax.UUCP (Greg Taylor) (08/21/84)

To this I can add nothing more than a rousing "Amen." The religious
right has for too long been allowed to let the fundemental split in
their formulations on abortions and nuclear policy go unchallenged.

Well, this is certainly one of the more verbose sets of incoherent
ramblings I've seen in a while.

I'd like to quote an authority of my own...Carl Sagan, who in
"The Dragons of Eden" quite correctly points out that there is no such
thing as "right to life" anywhere on *this* planet, except perhaps among
the Jains of India. We kill animals and plants all the time, sometimes without
even thinking about it. I think the correct phrase that the original author
wished to use was "right to human life". Then, of course, we can all debate
about the definition of "human".

Sometimes I feel like I'm fading away,
Looking at me, I got nothin' to say.
Don't make me angry with the things games that you play,
Either light up or leave me alone.

          THE WORLD'S RIGHT TO LIFE

I set before you life or death, a blessing or a curse.
Choose life then, so that you and your descendants may
live in the love of Yahweh your God, obeying His voice,
clinging to Him; for in this your life consists, and on
this depends your long stay in the land which Yahweh
swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, He would
               give them.
                                       Deuteronomy 30:19-20

In these perilous times Christians and all the peoples of the World
face a grave threat to their Right to Life. It is a threat not
only to the unborn in mother's wombs today, but a threat to all the
unborn children , to all the children, to all the women and men of
the future. This threat to every living person's right to life is
now only 10 minutes away-closer than at any time in history, closer
than it was less than 4 years ago when it was 30 minutes away.
This threat to the Right to Life affects not only the guilty but
the innocent, not only sinners and unbelievers but Christians and
saints, it threatens all of us. It is the ultimate sin of pride
and hubris- Man not merely taking away God's judgment of when
another person should live, but Man attempting to take away God's
judgment of when the whole World should live or die.

If Christians are compelled to speak out for the Right to Life of
the unborn in mother's wombs, how much more are Christians
compelled to speak out for the Right to Life of our living
children, vibrant and full of life, the Right to Life of our
husbands and wives, and most of all, for the Right to Life of all
the generations yet to be born that they may be allowed their
chance to enter God's Kingdom? Will Christians lie silent while
the Powerful in their relentless quest for Power, go unquestioned
in their right to threaten the life of Mankind itself?

The greatest moral question for Christians as well as all the
peoples of the world is the question of the World's Right to Life--
i.e. what shall we do about the prospect of nuclear war? Is
spending $1.65 trillion on preparing for War a moral thing to do?
Is bringing the world from 30 minutes away from nuclear holocaust
to 10 minutes away from nuclear holocaust a moral thing to do? Is
preparing to wage nuclear wars in space a moral thing to do? Can
anyone imagine Jesus Christ pressing the button to annihilate the
          whole human race?

Does this mean the right is for life and death, while
the left is for civilization?

All I can say to that is .....

			GAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!

What a bunch of garbage! Tim, you belong back in the Dark Ages when
it was normal for people to think like that. I bet you're the
type of person who sleeps with the Bible under his pillow.

>Can you imagine Jesus being aligned with any (human) government?

No, but I can believe that Jesus would take a strong stand
on moral issues. I can easily believe that Jesus would have
supported the abolition of slavery. I can also believe that Jesus
would have supported the Civil Rights Movement. And I also believe
that Jesus meant what he said when he said,
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
   Matthew 5:9
"You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not
kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment". But I say to
you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to
judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and
whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire."
   Matthew 5:21-22
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for
a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if
anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;
and if anyone would sue you and take your coat, let him take your
cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him
two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse
him who would borrow from you."
   Matthew 5:38-42
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father
who is in heaven;"
   Matthew 5:43-45
"And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his
hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest,
and cut off his ear. Then Jesus said to him 'Put your sword
back into its place, for all who take the sword will perish
by the sword.'"
   Matthew 26:51-52
what could be more clear? It was clear to the early Christians
who were persecuted by the Roman Empire partly because many of them
refused to serve in the Roman Imperial Army at a time when the Romans
were drafting as many soldiers as possible.
Bringing the world ever closer to nuclear war hardly seems to
correspond with Jesus' teachings.
Does anybody understand differently?
