[net.religion] Response to Tim Maroney

rsk@pucc-h (Rich Kulawiec (Vombatus Hirsutus)) (10/16/84)

After reading Tim's original article, and Ken Nichol's reply, I must
say that I find myself in near-total agreement with Tim. His statements clearly
articulate a position that I've held for some time, and his well-chosen words
say it more clearly than perhaps I ever have.

I felt Ken's reply was a wonderful example of what Mike Huybensz was
talking about in his article on "positive feedback"; I was hoping for a more
reasoned response from "the other camp", and I was disappointed by Ken's
avoidance of the issues; it seemed as though he preferred to answer Tim's
arguments with platitudes and circularly-reasoned statements about the
lowliness of man, and the elevation of god--and such positions have never
been terribly convincing to me, at least.

Wherever you are Tim, thank you.

Tim had posted his massive missive a couple of times before, each time
more illogical than before. Another netter and I each showed the
incredible illogic and implicit assumptions of the arguments.

Rather than reposting the entire rebuttal, I think I am safe by
classifying it along with:
Charles Lyell (whose _Principles of Geology had *the* major
		influence on Charles Darwin)
Aldous Huxley (_Brave New World_ et al.)
Bertrand Russell (as Charley Wingate has pointed out so well)

They all wanted intellectual reasons to excuse their morals.

You can't settle the issue until you've settled how to settle the issue.
