[net.religion] Intolerance in Net.Religion

amra@ihuxj.UUCP (Steven L. Aldrich) (10/25/84)

After reading the material posted in this newsgroup { abuse-group would
be more accurate -:) } I think the name should be changed from
"net.religion" to "net.rel.intolerance" for obvious reasons.

For the last year the content of many, if not most, of the articles
has been adversarial in nature. I get tired of reading line after line
of intolerance for others views, especially the Theist vs. Non-Theist
stuff! When will people realize that no matter what your opinion(s) are,
there will always be someone who doesn't agree with it/them? Just because
someone holds a particular point of view doesn't automatically make it
correct or incorrect. Peoples opinions are just that, OPINIONS. They may
or may not have ANY bearing on reality. I believe that Everyone should
have the Right to hold an opinion and to express it to the best of their
abilities. However, when they try to make others Conform to these opinions
or hold up their "opinion" as the one and only truth that's where I draw
   the line!

You are entitled to hold a dissenting view on the above, but I am not
obligated to agree with your dis-agreement. I try to keep an open mind
on things, and wish more people would try to be more TOLERANT.

Why must we confine most of the discussions to "Christian" and/or "Jewish"
topics? Why do many of these same articles seem to express Intolerance
for the opinions/beliefs/views of others? Why do there seem to be endless
streams of articles from certain people espousing a "religious crusade"
to stamp out any dissent from the Orthadox View of religion X?

Hasn't there been enough blood-letting over the last few millenia
about religion and religious issues? Must we now engage in
an electronic version of religious warfare? Please let's ALL try a
little harder to see the other person's point of view, okay? We are
not going to bring peacefull non-violence to the world by fighting
a war (verbal or otherwise) to achieve it. I hope that in the future
people will finally put an end to all this hatefulness by learning
to co-operate and tolerate other peoples opinions on "religious" matters.

    PEACE & BEST WISHES,

No.

Must we now engage in an electronic version of religious warfare?

Yes.

Please let's ALL try a little harder to see the other person's point
of view, okay? We are not going to bring peacefull non-violence to
the world by fighting a war (verbal or otherwise) to achieve it.

Wait a minute... let me write that down...

I hope that in the future people will finally put an end to all this
hatefulness by learning to co-operate and tolerate other peoples
   opinions on "religious" matters.

Why is it that the "religionists" as we have come to know and love them,
become so impatient with those that don't believe? Surely they must
realize that the search for God and the truth is an important one and
cannot be resolved by one or two lame articles. No one has come up
with any REALLY satisfying answers to the questions, "Is there a God,"
"Is there life after death," "Why are people born," "Why do they die."

Surely they must realize that a comprehension of the truth and of the
true nature of God is not aquired overnight. If this is indeed an
all-powerful and omniscient God, then I wouldn't be surpised if it
took alife-time... several life-times, even, to fully understand
him. The easy neat answers put forth by the religionists and the
atheists are equally repulsive... although I believe that the
non-believers have made significantly more convincing arguments
for their views.
