> > Can you guess what Other Religious Holy Day is celebrated in December? > There are many religions that have holy days in December. December 25 is an especially good day, because it is the first day after the Dec. 21, the shortest day of the year that the days become noticably longer and thus is the day that many religions celebrate the rebirth of the sun. December 25 is the birthday of: Jesus Christ (Christian diety) Mithra (ancient Ayrian god of light) Dionysus (Greek god of wine - fertility god) Adonis (Greek god - myth from ancient Phonecian) Horus (Egyptian sun-god) That day corresponds with the ascention of the constellation of the Virgin. Note that the name of the constellation predates Christianity. -- scc!steiny Don Steiny - Personetics @ (408) 425-0382 109 Torrey Pine Terr. A few weeks ago I posted the following item: ********** Can you guess what Other Religious Holy Day is celebrated in December? I'd be interested to know how many know what Day this falls on and when it occurred? I welcome your input on this matter.... Thanks in advance! I'll post a summary in "mid-December" if there is enough interest. Have A Truly Joyful Holiday Season Everyone! See you in the air-waves.... *********** To which I will now relate the "Answer" for all who are interested. The Answer Is....... On Dec 8 in the 6th century B.C, Shakyamuni Buddha gained perfect enlightenment after glimpsing the planet Venus in the morning sky. His first utterance after gaining "enlightenment" was, "Wonder of wonders! Intrinsically all living beings are Buddhas, endowed with wisdom and virtue, but because men's minds have become inverted through delusive thinking they fail to perceive this." Shakyamuni Buddha had been doing zazen exclusively for a period of six years previous to his enlightenment. The above is according to the Kegon (Avatamsaka) sutra.
