[net.religion] Article on bible translation

rrizzo@bbncca.ARPA (Ron Rizzo) (02/11/85)

The cover article of the February 1985 issue of The Atlantic magazine is

Barry Hoberman, "Translating the Bible", pp. 43-58, with illus-
		trations by Edward Sorel

It's only about English language translation, & is mainly taken up with
the production of RSV, the Revised Standard Edtion, whose main source
is the King James Version. However, RSV's editorial committee includes
Catholics, Orthodox, & Jews, as well as Protestants.

It also discusses the National Council of Churches' INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
LECTIONARY, which offers fairly gender-blind biblical texts that attempt
to redress the male-dominated language of scripture.

Thus other important projects, like Judaic editions of scripture or
Catholic research (ie, the Jerusalem Bible) get short shrift. Still,
the article's very informative, especially for those of us who know
little about scripture translation.
