Say trekies, what goes on here???? The other night I viewed THE WRATH OF KHAN and lo and behold as they are launching Spock's remains out into space Scotty is playing "Amazing Grace" on the pipes!!!!!!!! Is this a joke?? Or are they cheating and to give some kind of sense or reason to death bringing in Christian symbols?? Couldn't get more evangelical than ole John Newton's lyrics. By the way, if you want to read a guy who will blow you away, read the sermons and notes of John Newton. Especially his letters - he was a terrible speaker, though he packed his church (St Mary Woolwich, London) - they abound with good common sense faith and understanding. Read his biography (autobiography actually); it is still in print. I have a photocopy of his collected works (7 vols.) which was published in 1807, the year he died, by his friends. He's a hero of mine. I went to his church in London and climbed the pulpit (not during a service of course). Again, what a man!! He used to be a slave ship captain and called upon God during a storm at sea. He was part of the anti-slavery movement in England, along with his friend Wilberforce, and had quite a ministry. But back to KHAN. Any ideas??? Anyone else catch this? Regards, Ken Arndt

I really thought that the main reason Scotty was playing Amazing Grace was that *he* was a good dour scot and Church of Scotland, and 'cause he really LIKES "Amazing Grace"... ... or maybe because it's easy to find a tape of Amazing Grace on bagpipes. (Kind of like "Lady of Spain" on an accordion.) -- Opinions stated here. Charlie Martin (...mcnc!duke!crm)
