Summer in Israel Scholarship Program 1985 Go to the Source and Learn from the Sources Are you intrigued and excited by the thought of spending a summer in Jerusalem studying the foundations of Jewish knowledge while experiencing a world where the classrooms have no walls and the lessons come alive with your every step. This program is designed for a broad range of students from the -- Mature Beginner who has little or no background in Judaic Studies to ... Advanced Students who have a fundamental background but wish to refine their learning and textual skills and to deepen and broaden their knowledge. The program includes a wide spectrum of Judaic Studies taught on various levels and from a traditional perspective: Jewish Philosophy TANACH (Bible) Ethics and Values The Jewish Life Cycle Concepts of Mitzvot Jewish Holidays Meaning of Prayer Daily Tutorials Talmud/Aggada Independent Study Jewish Law Daily Hebrew Ulpan The day is divided into different parts which provide for independent preparation, tutorials, lectures, classes, and review sessions. With the guidance of teachers and tutors, the student learns to analyze texts in the original Hebrew and develops a method of "learning how to learn." An important key to each person's development is a staff of outstanding scholars whose personal involvement with students on a daily basis extends far beyond class hours. Classes are taught in English. University academic credit is available for these courses. This program is approved by the Government of Israel. Residence for participants will be in dormitories and neighborhood apartments. Extra-curricular activities include student musical groups, dance, creative arts workshop, and volunteer work with the needy. Sports available include swimming, basketball, jogging, baseball, soccer, and volleyball. Tours An integral part of this Israel summer experience is the schedule of tours and visits to sites and areas of historic and natural interest. The goal of the tours is to dig below the landscape to uncover the spark which has drawn Jews "home" throughout the centuries. Special emphasis is placed on appreciating the essence of Jerusalem. Frequent walking tours led by native Jerusalemites lead the students to discover the fabric of the city, its paths, its courtyards and its people. Day-long excursions and multi-day visits to various parts of the country provide the student with a first-hand knowledge of the Land of Israel while at the same time serving as an opportunity for relaxation and appreciation of the beauty of its geography. Cost to the Participant Ranges from $200 to $1200 for Round-Trip Flight, Tuition, Room and Board WHO MAY APPLY Jewish men and women, 18-34 years old. No previous background in Judaic Studies is required. The program is designed for the inquiring student whose interest in study is complemented by a desire to question, ponder, and analyze. SCHOLARSHIPS The amount of the scholarship awards will be based on the qualifications and financial need of the applicants. Early applicants will be given preference according to the availability of places. PARTIAL PROGRAM Although the special scholarship assistance is available only for those coming for the entire program, the institutions welcome students who wish to come for less than the full program. Cost is based on a weekly fee with tuition assistance available in case of need.
