Someone has asked me to repeat the address I posted earlier for contacting the Sanctuary movement. The previous address was for the Rio Grande Defense Fund, which provides legal defense to sanctuary workers facing criminal charges. I don't think I have that address here at work any more, but I do have a couple of others that some of you might be interested in: Casa Oscar Romero is the first stop for many refugees coming up through Texas; contributions sent to it go directly toward feeding and housing refugees. I don't know whether they are tax deductible. The address: Casa Oscar Romero, 311 Wentz, San Benito, TX 78586. Proyecto Libertad (Project Liberty) provides legal and other assistance to refugees who have been apprehended by the INS and are waiting for immigration hearings or deportation. Again, I'm not sure about its tax status. Its address: Proyecto Libertad, 301 E. Madison, Harlingen, TX 78550. By the way, I just heard some sad news: yet another Sanctuary worker has been arrested in South Texas. The woman serving as Jack Elder's replacement as the director of Casa Oscar Romero was stopped at a road block earlier this week, allegedly with a Nicaraguan refugee in the trunk of her car. (Elder, of course, was the director of the Casa for some time until his conviction for transporting refugees earlier this year.) Interesting, though, that this was a Nicaraguan refugee, since the Administration and its supporters have criticized the sanctuary movement for concentrating on Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees. --- Prentiss Riddle ("Aprendiz de todo, maestro de nada.") --- {ihnp4,harvard,seismo,gatech,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle --- riddle@ut-sally.UUCP, riddle@ut-sally.ARPA, riddle%zotz@ut-sally
