[net.philosophy] Julian Jaynes

cbostrum (02/17/83)

One is not impressed by JJ if one is impressed by his definition
of consciousness. This is nothing new. Jaynes "contribution" is
the dubious claim that organisms filling this definition have only
been around for a few thousand years. (As was said earlier,
Homer was not conscious. (Actually, I thought he claimed that the
Illiad's author wasnt concsious whereas the Odessy's [sic] was?))
Anyway, that is the whole point of Jaynes book really, and not the
definition of concsiousness.
