[net.philosophy] Discussion

Consider these two statements:

"Beauty is Truth; Truth, Beauty."

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Any comments?

My only reponse to "Beauty is Truth; Truth, Beauty" and "Beauty is in the
eye of the beholder" is "Nothing's better than a square meal" and "A bag
of potato chips is better than nothing." Let's be serious here, guys.

Either of these can be seriously discussed, but not in one discussion. For
one thing, they're talking about two different concepts of beauty.

If anyone on this group wants to discuss something, I'm willing.

If truth were not in the eye of the beholder, why would
we need such things as courts?

The truth of And("Beauty is Truth; Truth Beauty" , "Beauty is in the
eye of the beholder") is in the eye of the beholder.

On the subject of Truth and Beauty (or Top and Bottom, if you are into
Quantum Chromodynamics), I seem to recall the following quote:

``What is good is beautiful; what is beautiful will soon become good.''

This was attributed to Sappho; for those who are not familiar, Sappho was
a Greek poetess who decided that enough was enough. Men, of course, could
have fun among themselves, but women were expected to be faithful to a
man who was out having fun with other men. So Sappho started a new trend
out on an island called Lesboas; the island is now called Myticlene, as
I recall.

For "eye" read "mind", and you have a truth.
