The middle ground, construed as a set of moral positions, is not a mix of
selfishness and "altruism".  I say again:  a mix must contain some of both.
Altruism and selfishness, as Tom Craver defines them, are mutually exclusive
-- where there is one, there cannot be the other.  Saying that they can be
mixed is like saying that virginity and prostitution can be mixed.
