On liberty, society, and the analogy to roads, and regulations: It is society that appreciates the regulated traffic system, it is the individual that appreciates the passing lane. The difficult problem with government is that you must please both. Fundamentally government provides a fusion of evolution and maintains us as a single species, we progress together, and it will always be the responsibility of government to resolve differences between special interest groups, and to do so by means of polling the majority. Unfortunately, too many people feel it is the responsibility of government to stop evolution, ( like MOST democrats I have listened to ) and the result is that the populace tends to get divided into the have's and have not's. Both are extremes. One leads to war, the other leads to starvation. Both are equally valid forms of catastrophic evolution. The privileges granted to you at birth are an appeal for you to continue their enforcement. There is no way of stopping evolution, what we can hope to do as a species is to modify it so that the quality of life improves in general. This does not, and should not, include the continued preservation of individuals not capable of maturity and self support. How can we enforce this? Economically. We throw good money into poor resource when we hand out. There is no bigger waste than a non productive environment. A job should always look more attractive. This is what I believe is lacking in society today, that with the number of people inhabiting the world, and the way in which we have to stretch our resources, the unemployed would otherwise be dead, instead, they self righteously claim it is OUR responsibility to secure their survival. Perhaps we should instead secure ours. I realize that I presented somewhat of an extreme, but I do feel that those who would attempt to stop the world will only end up stopping themselves. Their love is a mindless utopia, and not a driving reality. ----{ john williams }---- < I'll show you outside > (DEC E-NET) KIRK::WILLIAMS (UUCP) {decvax, ucbvax, allegra}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-kirk!williams (ARPA) williams%kirk.DEC@decwrl.ARPA williams%kirk.DEC@Purdue-Merlin.ARPA
