[net.micro.apple] looking for apple terminal emulation software

4341shn (04/07/83)

I have an Apple //e with Apples 80 col card and I want
to use it as a terminal on unix. I use vi alot so I would
like a reasonable emulation (like vt100). Others in our
department have apple II+ and videx 80 col cards and we
all have microsoft cp/m cards. The best emulator would be
cp/m based (i.e., not copy protected) and run on all of
our apples. Communications is at 1200 baud using apples
super serial card and 212 modems. Please send recommendations
and experiences.

Just about the best terminal package for the Apple II (or IIe) is Bill
Blue's Ascii Express "Pro". This package supports full terminal
emulation (default as shipped is vt52, but the options are adm3a,
Hazeltine 1500 or soroc with the added option of adding your own.) with
any 80 column board. The package uses interrupts so you can print or
look at your disk directory while recieving a file without losing any
characters. Auto logon routines, auto answer routines with password
protect if desired. A "TWX" mode with answerback. Cristianson protocol
or ascii text file transfers, internal text editor and other very
useful features.

He's gone to a great deal of trouble to allow the use of just about
anyones printer interfaces, modems or 80 column boards. Its as easy to
use a Hays 'Smart Modem' as it is to use a Ventel 103/212, a Novation
Apple cat or even an acoustic coupler.

The disks are not copy protected and the program can be transferred to
hard disks or duplicated for back up.

If you are using a Novation Apple-cat with the 1200 baud option than
the software will speed select on recieve, otherwise you can use the
300 baud modem for dialing and then automatically switch to your Vadic
triple or whatever.

I've been quite sucessful using an Apple with "AE PRO" to play rogue or
use vi with. All the ascii characters not supported on the Apple's
keyboard can be sent using a single prefix character.

Other versions of the package will soon be available for the IBM PC in
native mode and soon a generic CP/M version for just about anything
else.
