[net.micro.apple] Fast Apple DOS'es?

lra (05/10/83)

There exist several software packages that claim to greatly increase
the speed of Apple DOS 3.3. (Pronto-DOS, Diversi-DOS, etc.) An
advertisement for Diversi-DOS states that "Apple DOS 3.3 takes 18 disk
revolutions to read a single track, whereas 'Diversi-DOS' reads or
writes a track in just 2 revolutions".

It it true that DOS 3.3 is this inefficient, or is there some error
detecting, error correcting going on in DOS 3.3 and not in Diversi-DOS?
Does anyone know what types of tricks Diversi-DOS could be doing?
Though this example concerns the Apple ][, specifically, could some
of the speedy tricks be conducted for other DOS'es ?

						Thanks in advance,
