[net.micro.apple] Want Modem Suggestions for Apple

pvl@houxh.UUCP (09/06/83)

After looking at the modems offered by Apple, a friend was not impressed.
Anybody have other suggestions?

I used a Hayes Micromodem-II from 1978 until about 6 months ago with absolutely
no problems. Almost all of the software you would need is already on the board
unless you want to something esoteric like emulate a VT100 or do print-online.

I now use a Hayes Smartmodem 1200 working through a Mountain Computer CPS
Multi-Function card (Clock, Parallel, Serial). I use SOFTERM to emulate a
VT102 (a package which I highly recommend). I am now Beta-Testing a new
release of SOFTERM called SOFTERM-2 which I hope to post a complete review
of within the week.

Another good question to ask is what is a good serial card to use with your
modem if you get a standalone modem. The CPS card works fine for me, but
requires a piggy-back chip on the Apple-II. I don't know if it will work
on a //e. The old Apple serial card won't work for communications at all,
the old communications card did have a UART chip but was still shakey. I've
heard that the new Apple Super Serial card is good and the ALS serial card
is crummy. Beyond that, ask the NET.
