Has anyone out there used Apple Pascal on an Apple system with a RAMDISK? ( I think RAMDISK is the correct term, I'm referring to the external peripheral device which is actually a bunch of RAM but appears to the Apple as two disk drives.) Is there a marked improvement in such things as compile times in Pascal when using the RAMDISK instead of a real disk, and does anyone have a rough estimate of the improvement. A friend of mine told me that when using the RAMDISK with DOS files, it did not perform as well with text files as with binary files. Does anyone know if this is true and why? Does this have any effect on its use with Pascal. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

I have used the RAMDISK under Apple Pascal 1.1. It's great if you're in for a long session. I was working on a large project with 9 different source files, and I put them (and the compiler) on the RAM. It made a huge difference - a 10-minute compile became about four minutes. Also, flipping in and out of the editor (i *wish* you didn't have to quit the editor to get a new file!) becomes much more comfortable. It takes a while to get it loaded, though, and you do have to remember to save your "files" on a real diskette every so often. Unless you're spending a lot of continuous time on the machine, it's not worth it. The program which loads files from your diskettes to the RAM is a little strange. Its mechanism for selecting files leaves a lot to be desired. It also plays a little tune which gets annoying after a while.
