[net.music] \"long and winding\" pieces

schneider@vlnvax.DEC (03/11/85)

This subject has gotten a lot of attention recently and I find the responses
rather compelling (I've long thought of making a tape of such pieces, maybe
for long drives etc.) but I'm surprised there's been no mention as yet of
The Allman Brothers. The put out what I consider the still the best live
album (Filmore East) with 3 or 4 cuts which should make anyone's list.
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Jessica, You Don't Love Me. A few years later
the came out with "Eat A Peach" with Mountain Jam occupying 2 sides. Still
before their first breakup they put out "Win,Lose or Draw" (sort of a weak
album for them) with another extended piece (the title is slipping my mind...
something like High Falls),and when they got back together "Enlightened
Rogues" had Pegasus and then From the Madness of the West on a later album.

The earlier pieces obviously featured Duane Allman and the later ones Dicky
Betts, and all of them I've found to be the sort that prompt me to leave the
record on my turntable for days at a time. I won't go into the specifics of
each tune. I just thought they all deserved serious mention in light of the
current topic.
