Here's a way I set up an apple ][+ as a terminal:
1. Bought a smarterm 2.0 80-column board. 80-columns is a must if
you're really serious. The smarterm is an excellent choice
because not only does it give you an 80-column display, but
it also has some smarts (clear-to-end-of-line,
clear-to-end-of-screen, cursor-positioning). In addition
it preprocesses the keyboard input to allow upper/lower case
and a real-shift key if you attach one wire between the keyboard
and the gameport (real easy, nothing to take apart). Finally,
it allows you to type all those characters the apple keyboard is
missing (_`{|}~[]\@). I love unix pipes | and pascal comments { }
2. Homebrewed a serial interface and modem. There are several
you can buy, however.
3. Bought UCSD Pascal. A terminal emulator can be written in this
language/system in just a few lines.
Alternatively, many modems/serial intefaces come with the required
terminal emulator (with or without smarts) in firmware or on disk.
4. Wrote a unix termcap to allow the apple to be used as a fairly intelligent
terminal. This allows programs such as vi, vnews, and worms to be run.
The termcap uses the codes used by the smarterm 2.0 board.
Here's the entire listing, you may have to tweak the delays:
