I would be very interested in seeing a Macintosh newsgroup. P.King (...!hao!denelcor!pking)

There is an INFO-MAC list on the Arpanet. Can someone gateway it? =Spencer

Awright already! As USENET admin for ucbvax, I promise that as soon as I get the damned software working again, INFO-MAC will be gatewayed. <Insert-Favorite-Deity-Here> Help the sites that are still running < 2.10. Why does the fact that there is a lot of traffic in INFO-MAC argue AGAINST the desirability of a gateway to USENET. Wouldn't USENET types (like me) want to see all this (presumably interesting) discussion? -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt

Actually, I contacted the administrator for INFO-MAC, and there is already so much traffic just on the ARPANET mailing list that he feels a USENET gateway would be inappropriate at this time. He is also attempting to have the mailing list concentrate on the schools in the consortium that got the special pricing deal. Though if INFO-MAC goes to a digest format, it might then be appropriate to gateway that one-way into fa.info-mac (you'd mail submissions to one address rather than posting directly). So. No INFO-MAC gateway for the moment. That leaves a USENET-only newsgroup. There are several options, including: a) leave things alone and use net.micro.apple b) create net.micro.apple.mac for MAC and LISA traffic c) use net.micro.68K d) create a newsgroup of some other name (several suggestions). -- John Quarterman, CS Dept., University of Texas, Austin, Texas jsq@ut-sally.ARPA, jsq@ut-sally.UUCP, {ihnp4,seismo,ctvax}!ut-sally!jsq

I believe that the traffic problem that they are worried about with gatewaying INFO-MAC to Usenet is not the volume TO Usenet, but the anticipated volume FROM Usenet to the mailing list. The volume of INFO-MAC is already huge. It seems to greatly outnumber UNIX-WIZARDS, for example. ---rick
