munch munch Last week I called Apple about the availability of MacPascal and MacBasic and was told that they will be some time off ("around third quarter"). I also asked about the rumored C compiler and got two comments - "around Summer" and "we can't comment on the release date of a third party until the product is released." Rumors are that MicroSoft will do the C compiler - pretty logical as they have Mac experience and a 68000 C compiler for their Xenix. Does anyone have anything more solid on this? More things to wonder about -- What is the status of the DS Sony drive for the Mac? It is now clear that a special version is required and it is also clear that Sony is selling many more drives than they can produce. Is it worth it to go with the external SS Mac drive now (it would be essential for any serious playing around), or to hold out for a DS drive? Steve Crandall mhuxt!evans

[] I don't know when Apple plans to release MacPascal or MacBasic, but I've seen (and used) both of them in the form of a pre-pre-release(?) version. Both languages are fast and have excellent user interfaces, assuming what I saw was representative of the final product. A few rather crude benchmarks indicated that MacBasic runs 3-5 times faster than the interpreted BASIC on the IBM-PC. MacPascal seems to be interpreted, (or perhaps incrementally compiled?) but runs quite fast also. I think both languages are worth waiting for. Doug Hall ittvax!ittral!hall

123 Skidoo I've seen Microsoft (?) MacIntosh BASIC on sale at a computer store in Mobtreal (last weekend). It was listed at something like $200 CAN. They also had multiplan. I guess the Mac software has arrived. Unfortunately, they salesman told me they couldn't get any (enough) machines. -- Gregory Dudek {cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo,uw-beaver}!utcsrgv!dudek
