[net.micro.apple] Apple //e as UNIX terminal - questions

dma@houxf.UUCP (D.ANDERSON) (04/16/84)

I need some advice about using an Apple //e with UNIX. For the
past year I've been using a //e (and AppleWriter II) for word
processing at home and UNIX (HP 2624B, vi and mmx) at work. It's
been frustrating at times dealing with the two editors and not
being able to transfer files. I now have the opportunity to
replace my 2624B at work with a //e.

In addition to the normal //e and terminal emulation modes I hope to
be able to use the //e in two additional modes:

    - as a UNIX terminal for vi, netnews, etc., but using the //e
      disks for file storage

    - just like at home but using mmx as a post-processor with the
      XEROX printer, etc.

I've ordered a 128K //e with the new duo-disk drive and monitor.
I have a leased 212A modem. I haven't chosen a printer yet. I'm
using an Apple DMP with a Grappler at home and am happy with the
combination. I'd like to get the //e mouse and MousePaint - it
sounds nifty. I expect to continue using AppleWriter II (or
maybe AppleWorks). Questions:

    1. What terminal software packages should I be looking at?
    2. What is the best serial interface to the modem?
    3. What cable do I need to the 212A (which pins connected,
       tied together, etc.)
    4. Can I do graphics with the Imagewriter and the //e?
    5. Any other comments or recommendations?

Thanks,
