Tonite I assembled a IIe with single Apple drive for my wife's elementary school. Later someoe told me NOT to apply the U-clamp to the cable AND the metal tab (as shown in the Apple book) but only to the metal tab. He said tha, when he assembled it as in the instructions, he pinched the cable, shorting two wires and "blowing a chip" on the drive PCC board. Can anyone confirm or deny this? And quickly, if possible. Thanks, Brint Cooper (abc@brl-tgr.arpa)

With sufficient care, no damage will result to the cable when clamped according to directions. The change from the Apple II/II+ procedure (metal tab only) results from more stringent FCC requirements. If you don't care about meeting the requirements then any method of grounding the shield will do.

The problem is minimized if you are careful to avoid overtightening the clamp and make VERY sure the cable fits into the small space provided along the edge of the slot. It is VERY easy to get the cable pinched because it is VERY hard to get it in correctly. The tight quarters and short cable length don't help, so you must have the patience to back off and try assembly over again if it doesn't look right. Of course, if you already have it installed, and it isn't too tight, and it doesn't look pinched or installed crooked, and it works, you are probably safer just to leave it alone...
