[net.micro.apple] Macintosh disk repairing

byron@eosp1.UUCP (Byron Han) (06/14/84)

There have been a number of reports of disks becoming unavailable. By
this I mean when you insert the disk to open it, the system crashes with
ID=02 error. The disk is unavailable in that you cannot even erase it!

There are two ways of getting around this.

Number 1: If you have MacPaint/MacWrite documents on the damaged disk, get
into MacP or MacW and close the window and click on the OPEN selection
in the file menu. EJECT the MacP/W disk and insert the damaged disk.
This SHOULD be successful and you can save the file on another disk.

Number 2: You can try to repair the disk in the following manner. After
booting the system with the system disk, eject it. While holding down
the OPTION and COMMAND keys simultaneously, insert the damaged disk.
The system will then try to repair the disk. You will lose, however,
all of the folder hierarchy. Files inside the folders will be okay.

Number 2 came from Apple Technical Support, number 1 I found by experimenting.
Apparently, acc. to ATS, the problem is due to addressing problems in setting
up the file-display windows (w/all of those pretty icons.)

That's all folks!
