[net.micro.apple] Changing a System font

ward@hao.UUCP (Mike Ward) (07/29/84)

[HOO, BOY]

So, there I was, with the Font Editor newly in my possesion, having spent the
last several months getting sick of not being able to tell the difference
between a 0 and a O, or a I and a l. AHA, says I, I will edit the Monaco
Font and cross that zero and serif that I. So I did. Then I tried to
install it in the system file. OOPS, Monaco 9 is a system font. Can't
remove it with the Font Mover. So I removed it with the Resource Mover,
then used the Font Mover to put the new font in. Started feeling good.
Then I noticed that the System File I was using was one of the old ones.
No Matter, says I, I will just do it again on one of the New System Files.
Ho HO. It seems that the Resource Mover will not allow you to modify the
System FIle if you happen to have booted with the new System File. So
I booted under the old System File, renamed the new System File, removed
the Monaco Fonts, renamed it once again "System" and stuck the new fonts
in.

Here are the steps:

Copy the font editor, resource mover, the new System Folder, and the fonts
file that came with the new System Folder to a work disk.

enter the Font Editor, edit the font(you gotta figure that one out for
yourself).

install the fonts (I did Monaco 9 & 12)

exit the Font Editor

trash everything except the system file, the fonts file, and the resource
manager - empty the trash

DUP the System disk

Reboot with another disk as the startup disk

rename "copy of System Disk" as "foo" (or whatever) (can't do this without
the reboot)

copy *OLD* System file and Finder from another disk

reboot with work disk as startup disk

use resource mover to clear Monaco fonts from "foo" (Monaco fonts are 512,
521, & 524)

exit resource mover

reboot with some other disk as startup disk

trash system file on work disk - empty trash

rename "foo" as "System"

Use Fontmover to move new Monaco fonts into System

reboot from workdisk

copy System file to destination disk

test with macTEP and Macwrite

jubilate

copy System file to *ALL* your disks

Notice that Macterminal is still using the old font (I just now noticed)

Back to the resource mover...

>>>>>>NOTE<<<<<<<<<
The utilities from the software supplement may work great on a Lisa (don't
know, don't got one) but on the Mac, they have a way of crashing the system
and/or trashing the disks. SO, don't use them on anything valuable, and
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!!

Disclaimer: There is no guarantee that this procedure will work for you.
In fact there is no guarantee that this procedure worked for me. All I
know is that I can run MacTEP (and expect to run Macterminal) and see crossed
0's and serifed I's. If you have any problems, give me a call, and let's
talk about it.
