I just downloaded the font editor and resource mover from Compuserve, and have been playing around with them. I made a "new" font (a slightly edited version of an existing font), then went to install it. Brought up MacWrite, and there was the font name in the menu, but both it and Geneva were checked on, and what I got was Geneva. Well, thought I, there must be a collision in the resource numbers of the two fonts. So, I started playing around with the number of the new font. I also began using the font mover to install the font, rather than the resource mover. So, the next problem was that I clobbered Toronto--when I would bring up the new font, the installed Toronto fonts in the system took on the name of the new font! Another result of a resource number collision. After playing around some more, I realized that there is a base number of the font, and the various sizes are offset from this base number by the value of the point size. Soooo.... the problem is merely to pick a base number that does not collide with the existing ones. After fiddling around, I got a base number for my new font which is OK (for now). But it was apparent that there is not complete freedom in choosing the base number. The question is, how do you choose this base number? Is there a fixed number of "slots" between one font and the next? If not, where is the variable number of "slots" (for want of a better word) stored--can I get at it with the resource mover? Does someone have a list of the currently occupied numbers? Pls answer by mail. Kim Helliwell {hplabs,menlo70}!analog!kim
