If you want to start from scratch, maybe you should check out the 16081 floating point chip. It has recently been in the press as a coprocessor for the 68000 (ala digital acoustics). It is supposed to be relatively easy to interface to the 68000, but I have no idea what it would be like to interface to a 6502. Price is about $200 if you can find it. Made by National.
