[net.micro.apple] APPLE RUMOR

KSPROUL@RUTGERS.ARPA (10/02/84)

Warning, this is JUST a rumor, and ONLY that... I have ONLY heard it from
ONE source, and that is all...

Somebody told me that Apple bought ALL of the advertiseing space in the
NOV 7 Newsweek!!

Now the person that told me this works in the publishing bussiness soo...

Anyway, this is JUST a rumor!!!

PS: If this is true, it is a historic first!!

From: "Jerry E. Pournelle" <POURNE@MIT-MC.ARPA>

I would find that rumor hard to believe imply because much
advertising is paid for months in advance and scheduled in
advance; what would Newspeak do, throw out the Hertz ads to
replace them with Macintosh? Most magazines expand and contract
with ad space so that there is no "fixed amount" of ad space to
buy.
Could your rumor refer to a special computer issue or something?

Yes, Jerry, its true. It has been confirmed by Apple, Newsweek, and
Computer World. See Computer World of October 1st.

According to this week's (Oct. 1, p.83) *Computerworld*, Apple is buying out
the *special election edition* of Newsweek, which is not necessarily the
same as the November 8th edition. This would answer Dr. Pournelle's
objections about displacing regular advertisers.

My question is, what on earth can Apple DO with that much space? Dearly
as I love the Mac, I'd rather use it than read about it. Its qualities
are easier to convey by demonstration than by description.

Perhaps they'll be advertising 'the complete Apple line' rather than simply
the Mac.
