<> I have recently been victimized by either a power line and/or telephone line glitch which took out my modem (Hayes Smarterm 1200) and my serial card (CCS 7710). Having repaired both, I need advice on protection devices to prevent a reoccurance. (Murphy says lightening will strike twice.) I recall seeing an ad for a power strip that contained filters for both the power line and the telephone line. Does anyone out there have knowledge of these protection devices? Do any of them actually work? I would appreciate any recomendations or advice. Jim Kent ih x2289 ..!ihnp4!iham1!jsk

If your modem gets zaped by glitches, check that protector block where the telephone line comes in is properly grounded and that the carbon blocks are in good shape. Inspect the blocks by removing the two bolts on the protector that appear to do nothing. After having lost two modems to lightning this way, I found that the Telco did not ground the protector when my phone line was installed. Ameritech did reimburse me (after a bit of a delay) for the modem repair charges. Gene Fowler ihnp4!invest!gef
